Strigilis

Strigilis

Romans used little soap for personal hygiene. Like the ancient Greeks, the Romans used oil and sand to scour clean the body. This first scrub was then removed from the body with a strigilis, a skin scraper. This removed dirt, dead skin cells and hair immediately. The strigilis acted like razor. On the strigilis sometimes hung a pot of fragrant ointment to rub it into the skin as this was meager of all scrapes.
