Triklinium

22/04/2015

The dining room for dignitaries at this inn is for the cena, a very special meal full of symbolism. There are three banks - a triclinium - each of which three persons seated. They represent nine gods or muses. The cena begin, after hand- and foot-washing, with an egg and ends with an apple. After the actual meal follows the orgy, carousal. Hence the beautifully painted walls. We see Bacchus, the god of wine, inspect the grape harvest. The original paintings are found in Cologne. In the triclinium belongs a special bedroom for guests who can not immediately return after Bacchanal home (or want) to go.
