Lecture: An Old Fishing Net Tells Its Story

On Wednesday, October 7, there will be a lecture featuring Silke Lange and Frank Wiersema, organized by the General Assembly of Friends of Archeon.

About the lecture:
In prehistoric times, the Netherlands was largely a watery landscape. It wasn’t the best place to live, but it was a good place to spend time because there was plenty of fish, birds, and game for a good meal. You may have seen a fish trap at the Swifterbant Culture hunting camp or the South Holland Archaeology Center. How are they actually used? Silke Lange and Frank Wiersema will explain this to you. And keep in mind, this is the Netherlands—this is our history!

Silke Lange: A 4,000-Year-Old Fishing Weir Tells Its Story
During an archaeological excavation near Stichtsekant in Almere, the remains of an exceptional fish weir, dating back more than 4,000 years, were uncovered. The thousands of wooden posts and stakes are exceptionally well-preserved and offer a unique glimpse into life during the Late Neolithic period. Following the excavation, extensive research was conducted on the wood and the construction of the fish weir. The results provide new insights into the types of wood used, how the wood was worked, and how the fish weir was built and used. The findings also reveal more about the landscape in which the fish weir once operated and how people utilized the water here.
