Forging Weekend

From Flint to Steel: Discover the Craft of the Blacksmith!

Fire, metal and craftsmanship! How did people make tools, jewellery and weapons in the past? During the Blacksmithing Weekend, discover how metalworking evolved over the centuries. Meet the craftspeople throughout the park, see their techniques up close and explore the development of blacksmithing, from the first flint tools to the working of bronze, iron and steel.

Long before people worked with metal, flint knappers were already making sharp tools such as knives, axes and adzes. Later, people learned to work with bronze, followed by iron and steel. During the Blacksmithing Weekend, meet a variety of skilled craftspeople and discover just how important their work was in everyday life.

A glimpse inside the medieval forge

At the medieval forge in Museumpark Archeon, this traditional craft comes to life. The building consists of a workshop and an ox stable. It is an interpretation of a fourteenth-century smithy, constructed using reclaimed building materials dating from the medieval period. These include old timber from a French farmhouse and medieval bricks recovered from an archaeological excavation in the Netherlands. The walls are finished with yellow clay, a characteristic feature of southern Dutch architecture.

Every blacksmith has their speciality

Not every blacksmith does the same work! Medieval blacksmiths made iron fittings for buildings, nails, knives and decorative objects. Weapons were the speciality of the weaponsmith, while horseshoes were made by the farrier. Each craftsperson had their own skills, techniques and specialisation.

Visit the Blacksmithing Weekend at Museumpark Archeon and discover how the craft of the blacksmith developed through the ages. From the earliest bronze workers to the master blacksmiths of the Middle Ages, history comes to life throughout the weekend!

Come and watch, listen and experience the skill of the blacksmith up close!
