Triclinium

Triclinium

The dining room (triclinium) for dignitaries at this inn is meant for de cena, a very special meal full of symbolism. There are three couches - forming a triclinium - on each of which three people can recline. The nine places symbolise nine gods of muses. After hands and fet have been washed, the cena begins with an egg. It ends with an apple. Following the meal itself comes the bacchanaal (drinking bout). hence, the beautifully painted walls depicting Bacchus, the god of wine, inspecting a grape harvest. The original wall painting were discovered in Cologne. The triclinium goes with a special bedroom for those guests who, after the bacchanaal, are in no state to go directly home (or do not want to).
