Roman Weekend brings Albaniana back to life

Roman Weekend brings Albaniana back to life

From Roman soldiers and ancient crafts to stories about the Limes: last weekend, the Roman past of Alphen aan den Rijn came to life. Museumpark Archeon looks back on a successful event where history, heritage and experience came together. Read more about the story behind the Roman Weekend.

Roman Weekend brings Albaniana back to life

Last weekend, Alphen aan den Rijn was fully dedicated to Roman history during the Roman Weekend in Albaniana. The city centre was transformed into a lively Roman settlement where visitors could discover what life was like nearly 2,000 years ago along the Old Rhine.

As a partner and closely involved organisation in this special event, Museumpark Archeon contributed to bringing the Roman past back to life. Through historical knowledge, craftsmen, actors and Roman re-enactors, visitors could experience how people lived, worked and fought during Roman times.

During the weekend, visitors enjoyed a wide range of activities, including Roman parades, demonstrations and spectacular battles. Roman soldiers marched through the streets of Alphen aan den Rijn, showing the importance of military presence and strategy within the Roman Empire. Visitors also discovered ancient crafts, stories and everyday life from the past.

The Roman heritage along the Limes also played an important role. Visitors could learn more about this former frontier of the Roman Empire and its significance for the region. A special booklet about the Limes was presented during the event, allowing visitors to discover more about Roman history and the remarkable locations along this historic border in an accessible way.

The location of the event has a special historical significance. During Roman times, the castellum Albaniana was located here: a fort along the Old Rhine that was part of the Roman Limes, the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. This history remains an important part of the heritage of Alphen aan den Rijn.

For Museumpark Archeon, the Roman Weekend perfectly reflects its mission to make history come alive. By allowing people to actively participate and experience historical stories, a unique connection is created between the past and the present.
