Roman herb garden

Roman herb garden

Next to the Roman house is the herb garden. In and around this garden are some 50 varieties of plants which used to grow in this country in Roman times. Many varieties were imported by the Romans because they were an essential part of Roman cuisine.

In the garden is a bust of the goddess Ceres, the Roman goddess of harvest and crops. Moreover, she is the tutelary deity of the common people, the ‘plebs’ and therefore, she must feel quite at home in the potter’s garden.
