Market

Market

In a medieval city a market was kept for about 2 or 3 times a week. The craftsmen in the city arranged everything for the market, the place, the time, and who were allowed to sell their goods. Craftsmen could trade and sell their stuff on the market. The villagers were also able to do their shopping, they usually bought grain, livestock, firewood, eggs, linen, wine and milk from farmers outside the city. The farmers also bought stuff on the market that they could not buy in the countryside, goods such as beer, bread, candles and weapons. Most of the stuff you sold on the market were bought in large numbers in the Middle Ages, for example corn was sold per bushel, which equals 28 liters.

It was not permitted to trade on the market in the Middle Ages before the market bell was gone, this bell usually appeared on the market and gave the signal for the start of the market.
