Late Middle Ages

Late Middle Ages

1100 - 1500 AD

During the late Middle Ages, the landscape changes even more. For example, by intensive cultivation of rye with turf fertilization. This increment fields and results in the esdekken. Elsewhere we see scopes; tracts of land sold by the landlord to settlers. On this basis, the production of dairy products and wool is tackled intensively; there is no more room for craftsmanship. They are free men farmers. The nobility shall large settlements a bailiff, a sort of mayor. Be granted city status, city walls built and trained militias city. The bailiff and aldermen (councilors) companies control everything in public life. The young cities are clean, spacious, there is plenty of work and plenty to eat. Professional groups also organize themselves; in many cities arose guilds, which place high demands on the quality of work and the work done. The training to master, consummate craftsman, started as a pupil of even years. Religion is in the medieval town indicative of everyday life; almost on every street corner stands a chapel. The church provides the timestamp, for holidays, for pastoral and beautiful stories. The church is also rich, and builds the most fantastic buildings. Clergy concern for the sick, shelter for travelers and other dependents. Moreover, they teach. Many boys in the town go to school, where they learn the Latin hymns, but also reading and math. The plague spreads through ports across Europe. In our country the number of casualties remains relatively limited. It is nevertheless a very dreaded disease. What she creates is not yet known and the wildest theories doing the rounds. Sometimes it follows a crackdown on so-called culprits; especially minorities in cities, immigrants are the spool. Only after the Middle Ages, is the breeding ground for all kinds of superstitions so great that are held real witch trials.

Between 1100 and 1300 AD the church justifies from various crusades. Crusaders and their followers flock to the "Holy Land" to liberate it. These are bloody wars. A side effect of the Crusades is that many of the customs of the Middle East vogue touch, such as the wearing of headscarves by women. There will also be exotic products and valuable knowledge on our side. Archeon in a fictional medieval town is shown from 1350: Gravendam. During this period, an administrative battle raging since the death of Count William IV in 1345. In the two streets Gravendam of that unrest, however, little notice. The short street towards the fisherman called street; the long road towards the monastery we call Lord Street. The houses in the Damstraat are already old in 1350, therefore live here what people easier than in the Herestraat. All houses are traditionally ground-floor houses, one lives down. Especially in an old house with only a smoke hatch is not doing on the floor or attic sting. But in the craft houses with chimney used one floor only as storage space. Only with the advent of more luxurious houses one use over the quarters as living space. In the yard behind the house is usually a private well and a privy toilet.
