In the caldarium stands a bust of Julius Caesar next to the door, the last Republican commander and inspiration for many emperors. It was customary to provide Roman public buildings, whether or not deceased rulers or other important people. They remembered the ordinary Roman to whom certain things, like bathhouses, was owed. It was a kind of official portrait, but of stone. In Roman times, these images were beautifully painted in bright colors.
