The Roman massage was meant to get the body glowing with health. This was done by kneading the muscles of the whole body. The epidermis was also taken in hand during a massage. By hitting firmly with a bundle of sticks, it was thought to dispel evil spirits from the body, which was beneficial to health. A red beaten skin was a sign of health, but also of wealth; a massage was rather pricey and therefore not for everyone.
