Arena means sprinkled with sand. This is the arena where gladiators fights are marked. In large cities, the arena is part of the theater (D- shape) or amphitheater (oval), where numerous shows are performed. In smaller towns and forts Romans built simple wooden arenas stands on a sand spit.
