Medicine Weekend

Beautiful Inside, Beautiful Outside
Health and beauty are inextricably linked. People have known this for as long as they’ve existed. Throughout this weekend, Museumpark Archeon will showcase how people from prehistoric times through the 21st century have cared for their bodies and well-being.

What is there to do?

During Medicine Weekend, discover how people throughout history dealt with illness, health and healing. From prehistoric herbs and healing ointments to Roman medicine and medieval surgeons. Throughout the park, you’ll encounter historical medicine and meet people who bring the medical practices of the past to life.

Step into prehistoric times and discover the healing properties of herbs, oils and beeswax. Learn how healing ointments were made and hear about natural remedies from thousands of years ago. You can also discover the remarkable tattoos of Ötzi. These tattoos were not simply decorative, but may have been used as a form of treatment for joint problems and other ailments.

In the Roman world, medicine takes centre stage. Discover different aspects of Roman healthcare, from herbal medicine and midwifery to military medicine. See how a projectile such as an arrowhead could be removed from a wound and learn more about how injured soldiers were treated. At the temple, the rivalry between the gods Hygieia and Aesculapius comes to life.

In the Middle Ages, enter the world of the medieval surgeon and apothecary. Discover how medieval medicines were prepared and which herbs were used to treat illness. A historical apothecary stall brings the medieval streets to life, while a medieval surgeon demonstrates his craft throughout the weekend.

Various historical reenactment groups will also be present. They bring a Roman military hospital, a First World War field hospital and a Cold War casualty treatment station to life. Discover how medical care and treatment changed throughout the centuries.

There is plenty to discover, see and experience.
From herbs and healing ointments to surgical procedures: step into the world of medicine through the ages.

Sunday, October 4: Medieval Procession of St. Francis of Assisi + Vespers
We warmly invite visitors who want to relive and experience the Middle Ages to join the Procession of St. Francis of Assisi. The starting and ending point is the Friars Minor monastery. The start time is listed in the daily program.

You can play a role in this procession. In no time at all, you’ll look just like someone from the Middle Ages. We’re looking for pennant bearers, incense bearers, altar servers (children), friars (m), guild representatives (m/f), and, last but not least, pets. After the procession, every participant will receive a small medieval treat.

1:00 p.m.: St. Francis Procession
2:30 p.m.: Premiere of St. Francis Vespers in the monastery

Discover, learn, and get involved during the Health Weekend at Archeon.
