Lecture with Field Trip: Bats at Archeon

On Thursday, September 24, another lecture will be held for the VVvA, this time with a field trip: Bats at Archeon Museum Park.

About the lecture:
There is plenty of nature at Archeon Museum Park. In addition to the fields with historic plantings, there is also plenty of space for woodlands, fruit trees, and flowering plants. This attracts many insects and animals that, in turn, feed on insects, such as bats!

Bats are perhaps the least well-known inhabitants of Archeon. Anyone lucky enough to still be at Archeon very late at night will surely see them flying around at some point. I certainly have! Throughout history, we’ve mostly known bats from fairy tales and legends. In those stories, they usually don’t play the role of the hero but have a darker side. That’s unfair—bats may look scary, but they’re not creepy at all!

During this lecture and field trip, we’ll discuss facts and myths and learn about the key role bats play in nature. Curious? Then sign up. After a short presentation at the Archeologiehuis, we’ll head outside to see and “hear” the bats.

Please note: bats don’t fly when it rains, so if the weather is very bad, the event may be canceled. In that case, you’ll receive an email notification.

About the guide:
Dick Warmerdam is the field trip coordinator at IVN Alphen aan den Rijn. As a guide, he is known for, among other things, the bat field trips at the Zegerplas, and Mireille is an IVN nature guide. IVN connects people with nature—and you can experience that at Archeon, too! They help people of all ages discover just how fun, healthy, and important nature is. They do this through nature activities, courses, projects, and campaigns. Learning and doing for yourself are always central to their approach—and that’s certainly true for this excursion at Museumpark Archeon!
