Procession Saint Crispin and Crispiaen

Procession Saint Crispin and Crispiaen

Celebrate the feast of Saint Crispin and Saint Crispiaen, the Patron Saints of the Guild of Shoemakers. Visitors to Archeon who want to revive and experience the Middle Ages are cordially invited to join a festive procession. The starting time is shown on the day programme.

If you want to take part in the procession, you may report to the brothers in the monastery 15 minutes before the start. We are looking for children who want to carry the banners of the shoemakers' guild and other guilds. Also the flags of our little town Gravendam will be carried. Some parents may become Brothers. We are also looking for singing adults to add lustre to the procession. Before the procession starts, we put medieval clothes over the modern clothes, go through the roles and have a singing exercise.

During the procession, the Brothers sing the Litany of All Saints. In it, the Latin names of St. Crispin (St. Crispinus) and of St. Crispiaen (St. Crispinianus) are also mentioned today.

At the end of the procession, every participant receives a small medieval treat.

Background information

Saint Crispin and Saint Crispian were brothers who had gone from Rome to Soissons in France. During the day they preached the gospel in the city. At night they worked as shoemakers.

As Christians, they refused to participate in the so-called cult of the emperor (offering a sacrifice to the emperor, who was thereby considered as God). Therefore, they were persecuted, tortured and finally killed with the sword.

Because they remained true to their beliefs to the very end - following Jesus, who also paid with his death - they were honoured as martyrs and saints. Because they were shoemakers, they are often depicted with shoemaking tools in their hands. And tortured with them (see picture below left). Therefore, they have become the patron saints of leatherworkers and shoemakers. Their church holiday is actually on 25 October. In Gravendam, the Friars Minor have the habit of celebrating the feast on the Sunday closest to 25 October.
